Smashing Magazine
A great website to just browse and browse. The site contains a lot of lists with beautiful (web) design examples. I just love to look around for fifteen minutes a day and get inspired.
Simplicity at his best: the hidden radio. The radio only has two functions: change the volume and tune to a radio station. When turned off we only see a lid. We have to lift the lid to turn up the volume, which is very intuitive, because we get to see more of the speaker as we lift the lid higher.
To tune the radio we only have to turn the lid. A LED will show the strength of the radio channel. What else do we need? And besides it is as beautiful as it is simple.:
Wordle
Wordle is a nice little application to play around with words. We simply paste in a piece of text and Wordle will generate a nice graphical representation of the words.
Songza
Songza is also a simple application to find and listen to music. Especially the navigation diamond with options to Play, Rate, Add to playlist or Share is great. A good way to display multiple options to the user without interfering with the result list.
960 Grid Systems
Useful idea for fast prototyping of HTML pages with a grid layout. Because of the consistent way the grid columns are setup the resulting layout will be clear and consistent. I don't like the restriction of a maximum width of 960 pixels, but for prototyping it can be good. The download also contains templates files for example Photoshop and a PDF with pages we can use for sketching.
Apple
The search box of Apple's site looks really nice. When we type in characters we can immediately see search results with images and explanatory text.

The Humanized news reader is a very simple RSS feed reader. The nice thing is the way new posts are loaded when the user scrolls down. This way a lot of information can be read by the user, without big waiting times.

I use Google Reader to read my RSS feeds. Times is a new type of newsreader. The contents of different RSS feeds is put together like a newspaper. So we can scan the headlines before reading the complete article. And the newspaper metaphor is incorporated completely in the application. Page transitions are like turning real pages and we can stack articles to be saved, so we can read them later.

Dropbox is an application to backup data on the internet and share with your friends. On the homepage is a nice video showing the main features of the application. I like the simplicity of it all. We can easily switch between desktop and web browser interface. Looking at the video inspires me for my own user interfaces for desktop and web browser applications.

A very cool example of another way to organize hierarchical data. Folders are displayed 3-dimensional and we can click on them and the contents flies out of the folder. The new elements are displayed in front of the open folder to indicate the items belong to the folder. This application is created with Papervision 3D.
